lancia

Montecarlo and asset selling is going up a gear. The Monte and my volumex HPE with seized engine are now up for sale everywhere that I can think of (capeads, gumtree, autotrader).
Im thinking about all my odds and ends laying around my flat that I can off load to people, so if you have your eye on any of my goods give me a shout.
It always sucks selling a car, in particularly when the car is a Lancia. I have had my Monte for a couple of years, so I have had my fair share with her and need to pass her onto the next owner before I leave for Ireland in 6 weeks time. So she has been clean and polished and is currently at Italsud Motors in Cape Town for some final repairs. After I get her back Ill start advertising her in the Autotrader and the like.

Some weekends I just give up and give myself up to what ever is happening, this weekend was a car weekend. Italian car day at killarney and the Lancia 100 year celebrations that the Cape Lancia Club held at the italian club.

Taking my Lancia Montecarlo on the track was brilliant, Im totally hooked, I will be back hopefully without crashing or breaking anything too hectic.

I also got the chance to work on a Lancia Lambda, which is a great previlige. The Lambda was one the very great early lancias, first production car in the world ever to have a monocoque chassis.
Thursday was a bit of a low point sold the prisma, in thoery I had 4 lancias that drove. The fulvia, prisma, beta and monte.. So I sold the prisma which should leave me with 3. No actually It leaves me with the fulvia if a jump start it and swop the batteries with the montecarlo who is now in pieces after some late night illegal racing action. The beta, is as tempramental as one of Ronnies girlfriends and since my dad blow up the battery with the angle grinder it struggles to start.
Its my birthday though so Im happy and alot older.
After much worrying about money, the drive down and if I would actually be able to fit in a Montecarlo. I had horrible flash backs to the day I was offered a drive in a Birken Lotus 7 and I couldnt get my legs in. Not to worry though, I got the money, it arrived safe and I fit. My two girls drove me to bellville to go and collect her. She was driven down on a big truck full of new cars. She is so much more sexy though!
My dad breaking a very rusty fulvia for spares. Dont worry though it was beyond saving and was missing engine, glass and just about everything else.
So I am sitting at work with a major hangover after a night out in stellenbosch and I find a Montecarlo in the autotrader. Now as anyone who has spoken to me about lancia before will know, a montecarlo is the one I really wanted. I had also been toying with the idea of selling the prisma. Last month I saw an ad for a very cheap montecarlo in jhb. This got me thinking, but it was sold when I called.

I have been looking for a montecarlo for a long time though. I have never been in the financial situation to buy one though or even seen many for sale. The first one I ever saw was sitting in Felix's workshop at Lancia Services in woodstock. It really stuck with me, when looking through my toy cars I found 2 lancia montecarlos! Now what would Frued say about that? So my best advice to parents is buy your children toy cars of cheap reliable cars and save them alot of heartache. Maybe there is a market for ugly barbie dolls as well?
First the side to side rubber joint in the gear change died. While I was at specialized mouldings I got them to make me some door handles for the prisma. The last door handle is about to break, which would leave me having to climb in via the boot which wouldnt be very stylish. So I fix that part of the gear-linkage and two days later I loose all gears! After a terrible drive home in first gear I see that the whole metal bracket cracked! I would love to know how this happened, I was able to weld it back together no problem. If only this car could talk, Im sure it has lots of stories.
All the bolts on the lower end of the exhaust manifold where seized so it took a creative session with the arc welder and some old nuts to shift them off. I eventually got them all off fine.

I also spent some time cleaning some of the choke of the head.
The Lancia Beta comes standard with a non standard three way type thermostat which you can probably buy if you live in italy or can afford to fly there to buy one. For us cheap lancia owners you have to modify the top header hose to fit in a generic thermostat. I used an old thermostat out of my Lancia Prisma as a guide but when I went down to Midas found the Volkswagen Golf one is slightly better fit needing alot less modification. I have not tested it yet, but its a very common modification so Im sure it will work.
Finally got my Lancia Beta running and idling almost like a regular car. I think the last problem was the slightly smaller jets that the car had been fitted with while it lived in jhb. So I managed to track down some of the jets at Windsors in Parow. It seems when I fitted them I didnt tighten the secondary one enough so it rattled lose and got sucked into the engine. Bounced around the cylinder before getting stuck between the piston and the block. You can see the remains of the brass emulsioning tubes, luckily being brass they didnt do any manager damage to the cylinder head or piston. Resisting any temptation to modify the head while I have it in pieces Im hoping just to get a new set of gaskets and put everything back together.
Its been awhile but my prisma engine and gearbox are now back in the car. Didnt manage to get it running or put the front suspension back on today though. I blame drinking games last night and early morning Aikido with Guy. Productive weekend though. Just hope it all works, all the gears appear to be there which is the most important thing.
Starting to rebuild, I found the tapered roller bearings on the diff are pitted, maybe the cause of the noise? Anyway I need to get them replaced, well I need to get them off first, our puller wont get under it. So this weeks mission is to get the bearings off and then to get new bearings. Sounds so simple, but wont be. One of the bolts holding the gearbox to the engine was totally missing when I stripped it, after a week long search I gave up bought a dye and made it myself. Which was mildly expensive.
It came apart alot easier than I thought. Nothing really nasty inside either, Im going shopping tommorow to see how easy its going to be to get some new bearings and seals while its apart.

Hope the welders do a better job on the bellhousing than last time. Taking it to a bigger place this time so they should do a better job.
As promised before leaving for Europe, I have taken my prisma engine back out. Well it has been two years since the whole engine came out. Probably a year since the last clutch change. Thanks to Ronnie who gave me a hand on Saturday to get the engine out. We are getting pretty good started late and still had time to fit the headlining into his Opel before supper.

Spent today (Sunday) cleaning everything trying to spot the oil leak! This time Im going to do as much as possible. New engine mounts, fix heater, new hoses, new belts, new oil seals. Ow and strip and rebuild the gearbox. Hoping to get it back in next weekend, if Im very lucky and can strip the gearbox, get it welded and put it back together all in 5 days Ill be very impressed. hell if I get it back together again Ill be impressed.
